Dusty Fingers

I've been having a really hard time sampling lately, and you know what? I'm glad lol.

Before I even started making beats I didn't know producers were sampling records. I thought it was all keyboard, so this really forced me to learn how to play by ear. I add so much now in my music you can't even tell the sample is there. Most of the time I can take the sample out, and the beat will still sound hot. When I first started sampling I felt like it was cheating because I grew up playing instruments, like "Really? I can just take an Al Green song and throw some drums on it then it's done?" So I would always add something. Sometimes it's just dope to see how creative I can get with a sample, whether it's me chopping it up or using a loop that most producers wouldn't touch.

One thing that a lot of producers don't understand is when you sample you're taking someone else's music, so they decide how much publishing they take if you ever get it placed. For example, my first placement was with Small World from DTP and contained a sample. I almost did not get the placement because of it. A couple of things needed to happen: the owners of the music had to hear what I used in order to determine how much publishing they would take, and then DTP had to make sure they had enough budget to cover the sample and pay me. It had to make sense business-wise for them to spend the money, meaning the record had to be good enough to sell more albums. I was even told 9th Wonder was on the album, but because they couldn't clear his sample he had to get it replayed within a day.

Sampling can be fun, but for all you producers who are just starting out, I would learn an instrument over an MPC--or just learn both. Owning your publishing is how you get paid, and when you sample you don't own it. They determine what u get. I think every producer has gone through this at some point in their career. Even Toomp went through it. He talked to khalil about the Big Brother beat and how that was a sample from Prince, but Prince wouldn't clear it because he was mad at kanye for not showing up to an event. So he had to get it replayed. (FYI you still have to pay what they call an interpolation fee, which is a lot less money than paying a master fee, where you're actually taking the music off of a record, cd,tape etc.)Point of all this is I don't like having someone else determine whether or not I get a placement so I'll stick to making my own music or at least replaying.

Mix up

I sent Goapele beats about 3 weeks ago and I think she thinks there Khalil's, lol either way I guess she likes them. This is what I'm going to have to deal with until my name can become big, but its also the beauty of it because I can backpack off his name so people will listen to me. I got a twitter from my homegirl and she said "Goapele said shes listeing to dj khalil beats WOW". So now I gotta make sure that he didn't randomly send beats to her at the same time as me.

Anywayz, I Just got off the phone wit khalil about this Dre. record that leaked feat. Nas and TI. Of course when a record is leaked nobody knows who did what, so they just put produced by Dre, but actually khalil did the beat two years ago. The FBI is on the case for these people leaking Dre's records, scary ish!!!!!

HERE'S THE LINK

Time zone

This is the industry time zone.

1 month=5 months

1 year=2 years

1week =3 weeks

1 day=1 week

1hour= 2 hours or sometimes 1 week

And of course this all depends on the situation whether your dealing with a meeting with a big time A&R, or you have a time set up for a studio session. If you can somewhat use this as a guild line you will never be disappointed. There are always some sort of politics involved in the music industry more then likely it's probably why your favorite artist hasn't dropped an album in a while.

For all you producers out there, you can't sit up here and tell me you don't rap, sing, and dance to the music you make!!!!!! Well if you don't, I do. This is a video of me and danny keys working together over the weekend I had him making a bunch of samples for me with all the sounds I made over the week. The main sound he is using here is called "jackie chan". FYI I know I can't sing but thats the point I get excited about music.

50 vs. clipse

Got a call about 1:30am last Thursday night from Khalil saying that the Clipse came through to the studio last minute, and he showed them two records--one was mine; one was his. They wanted both!!! lol OK let me back up. He said they listened to my record about three times and "They loved it." One problem: it was the same record that we sent to 50! This is a great problem to have...SOMEbody's going to take this record! So far it's looking like the Clipse, but if neither wants it he told me he's sending it to Fabolous. Somebody's taking this record because it's cross over. OK thats all.

Copy Rat

My dude DJ snuggles just hit me and told me that he thought I did a track on Lloyds last album, because of the similarities between a youtube beat I did about 3 years ago and Lloyds track called "treat you good". To me it only sounds the same when the verse comes in with the chords, other then that they don't sound the same to me.

Believe!

I was looking for inspiration earlier while working, and I started listening to old beats and music I had done a while ago. I listened to the Kison album I did--not many people got a chance to hear it--and I felt like musically it was pretty dope. That was one of the first times I got a chance to get live instruments involved on a album. The track "Follows Me " is the one I'm really proud of, I had violins, my brother on the bass, me on the trumpet, and I played the rest of the keys. So because not many people heard, I'm going to put it on here. I did every track on the album, except for the beat box interlude LOL. It's just good to see how far I've progressed, as this was only about two years ago.
